A Valentine's Tea, just for me

I was in the mood to bake cookies for Valentine's Day. I altered my Christmas sugar cookie recipe to make it chocolate. Then, I put on the tea kettle and made myself a cup of tea to drink with my snack.

When we went to Dubuque last fall, I found this brown transferware teacup at an antique store.

I find the design enchanting. There was no saucer, but a plain white one will do.

The cup is ironstone 'Royal Mail' by Myott. (Thanks to Ruth of Antiques and Teacups for information on my teacup!)  The bottom of the cup shows wear, but the rest of it looks nice.

Faux white roses in a red vase look nice on the table for Valentine's Day.

In my cup:  Stash Licorice Spice herbal tea - delicious!

Decorated cookies, plus a cupcake from the bakery. It all made for a nice tea time for me this cold winter day.

The cookie recipe came from Jacqueline at Purple Chocolat Home.

The original recipe calls for a French Vanilla cake mix. I used chocolate this time. This (the vanilla) has become my go-to recipe for cut-out cookies. Easy and delicious. It makes a small batch (about 15 cookies), so you may wish to double the recipe.

Cut-out sugar cookies

Mix together 1 Betty Crocker French Vanilla cake mix, 1 egg, 3 Tablespoons flour, and 1/2 cup almost melted butter.

No need to chill. Roll out onto parchment paper and cut into desired shapes.

Bake on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet at 350 degrees for approximately 8 minutes.

If desired, frost/decorate when cool.

The teacup is pretty and the tea sounds yummy.

What a sweet cup - I haven't been to Iowa for a while but hopefully in the future I can "revisit" lots of places I used to go looking at antiques!

Hi Beth,
I like your new transferware cup. The wonderful thing about these patterns is that you can marry them with a white/cream saucer and they look fabulous. I have not tried that recipe but it sounds easy enough. Your cookies are pretty and would be nice with a cup of tea. Thank you for sharing and coming to tea.

Blessings,
Sandi

I've never tried making cookies from a cake mix, Beth! Sounds like a great method & I'm impressed that you would even think to try it with chocolate. I never think out of the box like that. (pun intended) :/

Now I have to go find Kitty's recipe that Judith mentioned above. Kitty's hubby is having surgery today for a broken humerus, so I won't bother asking her today. So many recipes...so little time!

Hugs,
Rett

p.s. Your teacup is very pretty!

What a great "ME" post! Licorice Spice is one of my faves, in fact I am enjoying a cup right now as I blog, and watch the snow gently fall. Try it with a lemon squeeze. It's de-lish!
